How to Get to Mount Etna

The AST public bus departs exactly once a day at 8:15 AM from the eastern side of Piazza Giovanni XXIII in Catania. You will arrive at the Rifugio Sapienza parking area at 10:15 AM after covering approximately 35 kilometers. The two-hour journey includes a mandatory and frustrating 30-minute scheduled stop in the town of Nicolosi. Return buses leave the mountain at 4:30 PM sharp, giving you about six hours to explore. Arrive at the Catania bus stop at least 45 to 60 minutes before departure. Buying tickets in advance does not guarantee a seat on the bus. Queuing early remains the only way to secure your spot.

Driving from Catania to the southern base of Mount Etna takes approximately one hour. Follow the SP92 highway directly up the mountain to the main parking area at Rifugio Sapienza. The 35-kilometer route climbs steadily through changing ecological zones, ending right next to the lower Silvestri Craters at 1,900 meters. The town of Linguaglossa marks the start of this ascent, located about a 40-minute drive from Catania. From here, drivers climb through forested middle zones of chestnut, beech, and pine before reaching the barren upper slopes covered in volcanic ash and slag. Piano Provenzana operates active ski resorts equipped with lifts from December to March. During scheduled maintenance closures on the southern routes, this northern road provides the only vehicle access for winter sports.

The historic Circumetnea railroad departs from the Borgo metro station in Catania. This narrow-gauge train circles the entire base of the volcano rather than climbing it. The three-hour rail journey provides a broad view of the Etna National Park landscape from the lower elevations. You will pass through fertile slopes covered in vineyards and local orchards without dealing with the high-altitude cold or sudden fog. This route works well for those who want to see the mountain's scale without undertaking a strenuous ascent. Trains operate independently of the strict safety ordinances that govern the upper volcanic zones.

The Funivia dell’Etna cable car lifts visitors from the Rifugio Sapienza parking area at 1,900 meters up to the Montagnola station at 2,500 meters. The 10-minute aerial ascent transitions from green vegetation to ancient, solidified black lava flows. From the upper station, specialized 4x4 minibuses carry passengers up to 2,920 meters near the Barbagallo Craters. The high altitude brings cold temperatures and strong winds, requiring sturdy trekking boots and windproof jackets year-round.
